Nick Kyrgios Provisionally Suspended by ITIA After Positive Drug Test

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme after testing positive for a cocaine metabolite.

The positive sample was collected during the Mallorca ATP 250 tournament on June 22, 2026, with a WADA-accredited laboratory later confirming the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. His provisional suspension officially began on August 4.

Kyrgios has publicly accepted responsibility for the incident, calling it a “huge mistake” and apologizing to his fans, family, sponsors and young supporters. He also said that injuries and the physical and emotional challenges of recent years had taken a major toll on him.

The Australian has the right to appeal the provisional suspension but has not appealed so far. Under the ITIA's anti-doping rules, a provisional suspension can prevent a player from competing while the case is being dealt with.

The development represents another major setback for Kyrgios, who has struggled with injuries and limited competition in recent seasons. He has also announced that he will step away from public life for 28 days to focus on himself and his recovery.
